Cartagena is a historical city and a city of contrasts... a Spanish colony... home of the largest slave market in the Caribbean... a modern beach resort...
As we travelled around the city we became keenly aware of the different economic lifestyles of it's citizens.
We saw modern highrise living in Boca Grande that was easy to classify as an upper class and tourist neighborhood neatly placed next to the beaches.
Along the main avenues of the city we saw many different eamples of permanent commercial shops as well as several areas of more transitory market stalls, some large and some small.
When we were there, there were many construction projects that seemed to be stopped in the middle of progress.
Whether this was a constant state or just an short pause in the work was hard to tell.
We saw many areas where the side streets off main avenues were unpaved.
Similar to many third world cities we have visited around the world, the further we got from main avenues the poorer the neighborhoods seemed to get.
